AWARDS
This award celebrates significant photographers by offering them a platform to showcase their work in Greece. It also fosters a connection between audiences in Thessaly, Larissa, and across Greece with leading photographic projects and international artists. The goal is for the winning and shortlisted photographs to be exhibited within the Region of Thessaly and beyond, bringing remarkable photography to a wider public.
The main selection criteria are: artistic originality in conception and/or execution, relevance to the theme of each cycle, the narrative and semantic flow and the coherence of the photographs with each other so as to create a unified and coherent series, technical excellence, modernity, photographic style, and most importantly, the emotional impact and reflection on the theme of each Thematic Cycle that the images and the entire photographic series communicate.
It is recommended and expected of participating photographers to approach each theme with a broad mind and creativity. The theme of the cycle proposed each time is intended to be a starting point and not a restrictive condition, and is open to any interpretation and any literal or allegorical approach.
THEMATIC CYCLES
At its core, a Turning Point is ambiguous. It may happen in an instant or span a period of time, but it always signifies a break in the current course or a spark of innovation, the seed of renewal — potentially innovative, uncertain, or irreversible. On one hand, it might signify the end of an era defined by different social values — a departure from the human element and the human scale, marking alienation and estrangement in contemporary societies. On the other hand, it may lead to the birth of a new era — one that may be unstable and unpredictable, yet full of potential and innovation. It can signal the beginning of a new chapter where risk and opportunity coexist, giving rise to a different vision and new paths of
coexistence — social, artistic, personal, or existential.
Turning Point is the title of the 2025 Theme Cycle for the TAKIS TLOUPAS AWARDS, marking the inaugural year of the competition. It forms the conceptual compass for 2025, both a theme and a challenge, a call to photographers to capture the essence of transformation.
We invite artists to explore situations marked by transition or impending change — whether deeply personal or broadly political, visible in the landscape or etched in the human face—
capturing a state of in-between: where tension brews, where choices are made, and where identity — of a person, a place, a people — begins to evolve.
We invite submissions that explore the tension and the shift in direction, not merely as a consequence but as a charged moment: the co-existence of multiple possible futures. There comes a moment — quiet or explosive, expected or sudden — when the path ahead veers, and there is no turning back. A shift unfolds. Something fractures, transforms, or awakens. This is the Turning Point: the instant of change, the threshold between what was and what comes next, whether on a personal, socio-political, or geographical level — a milestone after which the world can no longer go back.
We seek images that:
- Explore critical moments of personal development, or emotional ruptures
- Capture the impact of historical changes on society or the environment
- Depict landscapes reshaped by time, conflict or human intervention
- Record dramatic upheavals or subtle transformations; visible or buried beneath the surface
Creators around the world are invited to respond to the Open Call of the TAKIS TLOUPAS AWARDS with works that capture those seconds — or years — of transformation.
What does the point of no return look like? Is it merely a memory we recall, or a historical record of reference?
